Review: Glenmore 12-Year Single Malt — A Store Tasting
Glenmore 12 is one of those approachable single malts that sits neatly between accessible supermarket whiskies and more expensive aged expressions. We conducted a side-by-side tasting to evaluate how it performs in aroma, palate complexity, finish length, and overall value. Below is our tasting journal and final verdict.
Tasting setup
We tasted Glenmore 12 alongside two comparable 12-year single malts from nearby regions. Glassware used was the Glencairn tumbler and tasters allowed the whisky to rest for 10 minutes after opening. Water was available to experiment with dilution.
Nose
On the nose Glenmore 12 opens with light orchard fruit — green apple and pear — followed by a gentle wave of honey and toasted cereal. Subtle vanilla from the oak appears after a few minutes. There is a faint coastal note that hints at distant maritime influence but it remains understated.
Palate
The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant malt backbone. Initial sweetness gives way to spice: white pepper, a touch of clove, and oak tannin. The middle shows cereal and shortbread notes which make it feel comfortably Scottish. Adding a few drops of water opens citrus oils and softens the oak.
Finish
Finish is smooth and moderately long with lingering honeyed malt and a gentle peppery kick. There is no heavy peat or smoke, making this dram a good choice for those who prefer fruit-forward whiskies.
Scorecard
- Complexity: 7/10
- Balance: 8/10
- Value: 8/10
- Finish: 7/10
Pros and cons
Pros: Friendly, balanced, and versatile — great for new whisky drinkers and as a mixer for classic cocktails. Cons: May be too gentle for peat lovers or those seeking bold oak character.
Who should buy it?
If you want a reliable 12-year dram that pairs with food, makes a solid base for whisky cocktails and is approachable neat, Glenmore 12 is a strong candidate. It sits comfortably on a shelf and works well in social settings where not everyone shares the same palate.
Price and availability
At Scots.Store Glenmore 12 is typically priced at £39.99 per 700ml bottle. For its age statement and balance of flavours, we consider it excellent value.
Final verdict
Glenmore 12 earns a final rating of 8/10. It is not a dramatic, showy whisky, but it excels in being dependable and pleasant. If your tasting shelf needs a neutral but characterful 12-year single malt, this one fits the brief.
